The study included more than 500 male and female athletes who underwent surgery for a torn ligament. The average age was 27 years. Factors that could contribute to an injury recurrence in women include changing estrogen levels, anatomical differences, and decreased strength of the knee.
Nguyen continued: “Given the results of our study, we believe that surgeons should advise their younger patients, women accordingly and consider modifying their surgical techniques for using grafts larger and / or strategies rehabilitation to reduce the possibility of a re-tear. ”
