Young women at risk of tearing the ACL repaired repetition ; Home “ Health News “
Women under 25 who have undergone surgery to repair a ruptured anterior cruciate (ACL) ligament are still at risk of a ruptured ACL recurring. The study included more than 500 male and female athletes who underwent surgery for a torn ligament. The average age was 27 years. Participants were allowed to return back to physical activity between six and 12 months after surgery if they were no longer experiencing pain and completed their rehabilitation program.
The lead author, Dr. Duong Nguyen said, “Our research showed that patients under 25 with [smaller] graft size of less than eight millimeters are more likely to re-tear the ACL after reconstruction. ”
Factors that could contribute to an injury recurrence in women include changing estrogen levels, anatomical differences, and decreased strength of the knee.
Nguyen continued: “Given the results of our study, we believe that surgeons should advise their younger patients, women accordingly and consider modifying their surgical techniques for using grafts larger and / or strategies rehabilitation to reduce the possibility of a re-tear. ”
