Asthma patients face an increased risk of pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. The findings were published in the European Respiratory Journal. The researchers looked at asthma sufferers of moderate to severe and the risk of pulmonary embolism deep vein thrombosis .

Pulmonary embolism is a condition in which the main artery of the lung or bronchus is blocked as a result of deep vein thrombosis, which develops when a blood clot travels to the lungs.

The study evaluated 648 asthmatic patients aged between 18 and 88. The history of asthma was examined, along with the use of medications and any previous diagnosis of pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. The results of patients with asthma were compared to individuals without asthma.

The results revealed that patients with asthma have a nine times greater risk of pulmonary embolism, compared to people without asthma. In addition, people with mild to moderate asthma were 3.5 times more risk of pulmonary embolism also. Moreover, the researchers identified steroids as potential risk factor for the increased risk.

Researchers led to a better understanding of modifiable health behaviors that may be related to asthma control. They stressed the dream as one of those behaviors, but said that usually does not get much attention in regard to asthma control.

The researchers examined sleep duration, insomnia and sleep hygiene in adolescents who do not have asthma and asthma to establish the effects of these factors on asthma control. Adolescents completed online surveys that researchers discussed below.

Sleep duration did not differ between the group of asthma and asthma no group, but teens with asthma reported insufficient sleep day compared with children without asthma (44 percent versus 31 percent, respectively). Asthma affects fertility treatment in women, prolongs pregnancy and low birth rate, according to research. So far, the association between asthma and fertility has produced conflicting results, but more recent studies used more in-depth testing for research.

For the current study, researchers analyzed 245 women aged 45 to 23, fertility problems without explanation. Women were tested for allergy and asthma, and had to complete questionnaires during fertility treatment. Ninety-six women had either a current diagnosis of asthma or were diagnosed with asthma when entering the study.

Researchers monitored the women during fertility treatment for at least 12 months, until they reached a successful conception, discontinued treatment or observation ended.
Overall median time to achieve pregnancy was 32.2 months in the non-asthmatic women and 55.6 months in asthmatic women. Asthmatics also were less successful conceptions – 39.6 percent -. Compared with 60.4 percent of non-asthmatic women

The lead author, Dr. Elisabeth Juul Gade said, “This finding in a clinical trial adds new weight to the epidemiological evidence suggests a relationship between asthma and fertility.
