Rates snuff consumption during pregnancy underreporting ; Home “ News Health “
We all know the dangers of smoking during pregnancy, but it seems that rates of smoking during pregnancy are well reported. In fact, more American women are lighting a cigarette during pregnancy than is believed. The findings are based on urine tests to measure nicotine exposure in pregnant women.
The lead author, Dr. Jim Greenberg said, “We have long suspected that the consumption of snuff during pregnancy unreported. But now we know how many women are struggling to quit smoking when they are pregnant. “
Smoking during pregnancy poses many risks to the fetus, including premature birth, infant mortality and birth defects.
Researchers reviewed the records of birth of more than 700 women from Ohio, since in this state birth records include smoking in the last quarter. Self-reports were crossed with urine samples references. Less than nine percent of women reported smoking, but urine samples revealed almost 16.5 percent of women were being exposed to nicotine.
Eight percent of black women in the study admitted to consumption of snuff during pregnancy, but urine samples revealed up to 21 percent of them they were actually smoking.
Greenberg continued: “This is an extremely important new information for us as we work to better understand the risk factors for preterm birth.”
The researchers suggest greater public awareness has to leave the participation of the dangers of smoking during pregnancy and the importance of quitting.
