at least 25 people have fallen ill in an outbreak of E. coli in a restaurant in Chicago. The restaurant has closed voluntarily for research, and the owners are cooperating with health authorities.

E. coli is commonly transmitted through contaminated as cooked beef, unpasteurized juice and raw food products unwashed. The main symptom of E. coli is diarrhea that may contain blood.

So far, five of those infected have been hospitalized.

Health officials are asking those who may have eaten at the restaurant to be presented in order to help boost their research.

A lawsuit is underway in one of the people who became ill after order three chicken tacos.

Farmers and researchers collaborate to prevent transmission of E. coli

Farmers and researchers are joining forces in an attempt to prevent the spread of E. coli. One study found that cows under heat stress and energy loss of milk production are more likely to spread a type of E. coli that can make people seriously ill – known as STEC. The results reveal a possible new target for prevention because it causes an estimated 100,000 illnesses annually in the US

Collaborator in the study of Dan Grooms said: “Most importantly, our study included livestock farmers who were willing to participate in projects that help improve the safety and quality of food they produce.”

“We hope to assess how often individual animals acquire different types of STEC [Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli] and determine which types are most commonly associated with disease in humans,” said Shannon Manning, principal investigator.

The next step is to determine the rate at which animals acquire STEC.
