Building muscle helps reduce the risk of premature death from heart disease, so doctors should encourage their patients to participate in endurance and strength training as part of a healthy lifestyle. The researchers analyzed data from more than 6,400 Americans with heart disease.
The researchers found that patients with greater muscle mass and reduce body fat were less likely to die from heart disease or any other cause, compared to participants in other categories of body composition: low muscle / high fat, low / low muscle fat, or high / high-fat muscle.
Individuals with greater muscle mass index generally had higher body mass, which could help explain the obesity paradox: people with high BMI tend to live longer. The results underscore the importance of maintaining muscle mass as a means to protect themselves from premature death, even in individuals with an increased risk of heart disease.
The American College of Sports Medicine suggests that even household objects can help with resistance training such as lifting groceries. more traditional methods include the use of weights and weight machines.
