is not a simple tree known as “drumstick tree,” or scientifically as Moringa oleifera is commonly touted as a super food because it is rich in nutrients, antioxidants and other beneficial compounds. Unfortunately, there is also a dark side to this small tree that is native to India, and there are some important precautions you should know before consuming

What is the Moringa

Moringa as a food is beneficial because of its ability to grow in a variety of climates, especially in subtropical climates. In fact, Moringa oleifera grows in virtually all countries where malnutrition is widespread and can be a big part of a comprehensive plan to alleviate malnutrition worldwide. In fact:

It is believed that the moringa tree originated in northern India and was being used in Indian medicine some 5,000 years ago, and also realizes that is used by the ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. This tree was, and still is, considered a panacea, and is known as the “Tree of Wonder”, “the divine tree ‘, and’ The miracle tree ‘, among many others. ( 2 )

it is also important to note that there are technically 13 different species of Moringa tree, but for simplicity, I am referring to Moringa oleifera tree in this post and using the common name only “Moringa”.

1. High nutrient content

Perhaps you have seen some of the health claims that gram for gram, Moringa has more protein than yogurt, more potassium than bananas, more calcium than milk and more vitamin C than oranges. ( 3 ) While this is technically true, it is important to note the distinction is “gram gram” and not in volume. From Moringa leaves are relatively light, 100 grams of Moringa leaves would be substantially volume of 100 grams of an orange

Consider the following :. A medium-sized orange is about 130 grams, or 4.5 ounces. Now consider a green leafy substance as Moringa leaves. For simplicity, we will use a similar leaf spinach, for comparison. The FDA estimates that 1 cup of raw spinach is about 30 grams. This means that for the same comparison “gram for gram,” a person would have to eat + 4 cups fresh spinach leaves to consume the same number of grams as an orange.

This comparison becomes even more evident with some of the other nutrients. For example, it states that “gram per gram” this plant contains twice the protein of yogurt, but 100 grams of yogurt is only about 1/2 cup, while a person would have to consume more than 3 cups (or six times both by volume) of fresh leaves to reach 100 grams.

While I’m not discounting the nutrients in this plant, this comparison is shown to note that for those of us eat a balanced diet, Moringa can not be as beneficial as it is for those who are truly malnourished.

Furthermore, although it is a good natural source of nutrients mentioned above, 1 cup of fresh leaves of Moringa provides only 10-20% of the recommended daily intake of these nutrients mentioned above, so that a person He would have to consume a lot for the levels of “super food” of these nutrients. Most supplements Moringa dried, not fresh, reducing the amount of certain nutrients and other concentrates.

2. They can reduce inflammation

Nutrition Authority explains:

In one study, 30 women took seven grams of moringa leaf powder daily for three months. This reduces the levels of fasting blood sugar by 13.5% ( 5 ).

In addition, a small study in six diabetic patients found that adding 50 grams of Moringa leaves for a meal reduces the increase in blood sugar by 21% ( 6 ).

I personally would not use Moringa only for his skills balance blood sugar, as some should be eaten regularly to see the benefits, but for some people it may be useful as part of a diet plan life (though certainly consult a doctor or specialist to make sure it is safe and will not interact with any medication before taking).

3. Positive effects on cholesterol

Moringa has also been studied for its ability to reduce cholesterol levels in human trials. This can be important with emerging research discounting efficacy and safety of statin drugs. Chris Kresser:


  1. statins do not reduce the risk of death 95% of the population, including healthy men without pre-existing heart disease, women of all ages and the elderly.
  2. statins reduce mortality for young and middle-aged men with existing heart disease, but benefit is small and not without significant adverse effects, risks and costs.
  3. Aspirin works as well as do statins for prevention of heart disease, and is 20 times more profitable. ( 7 )

Many of the foods that help reduce inflammation in the body can also have a positive effect on cholesterol levels in blood and eat a diet high in antioxidant-rich foods and vegetables and low in sugar can also be beneficial, but Moringa appears to be especially beneficial in human and animal studies. 4. Support for breastfeeding mothers

Another frequently cited Moringa is used to help increase milk production in nursing mothers. In fact, some supplement companies regularly recommend supplements based Moringa as a prenatal vitamin and during lactation (but see please see these precautions before taking this supplement if you are a woman of childbearing age!).

The only scientific backing could find for using Moringa as galactogogue (to increase milk production) is in a former studio of the Philippines, which analyzed the use of this plant for mothers with premature babies in the first three days of breastfeeding only, and found

in women during the days after delivery (3-5 after giving birth to premature babies), supplementation 250 mg moringa oleifera leaf extract twice daily appears to increase milk production in a time-dependent manner on the first day of supplementation (31% increase over placebo) and the second (48%) and the third day (165%). ( 8 )

Although there are some stories of women using Moringa to increase milk production (especially with this particular product ), could not find any other research to back this up, and perhaps an increase in milk production would be only due to increased nutrient intake, which is important during lactation.

5. Possible arsenic Protection

Although it has not been studied in humans, there is some evidence (from studies in rats and mice) that certain compounds in the leaves Moringa plant may be protective against arsenic poisoning. Since Authority Nutrition again

Observational studies indicate that long-term exposure to arsenic can increase the risk of cancer and heart disease ( 9 10 ).

Several studies in mice and rats show that the leaves and seeds of Moringa oleifera may protect against some of the effects of arsenic toxicity ( 11 12 13 ). These studies are promising, but still not known whether this also applies to humans.

6. Natural Energy Booster

This is one of the benefits of Moringa that definitely seems to have a lot of anecdotal evidence and this may be due to the amino acid profile of this plant . Many people in online forums and discussion forums say they have seen a noticeable increase in energy levels taking Moringa, although I relatively found little science to back this up and “energy levels” are one of the most difficult factors to measure objectively. ( 14 )

simply consume more vitamins, minerals and amino acids may lead to an increase in energy in many people, so it would be difficult to know whether this benefit is specific Moringa or just a result more nutrients in general.

Precautions Moringa

like many herbs and plants used as remedies, certain parts of the plant are beneficial, while others may be harmful in some way. This is true with elderberries, , which are excellent to help boost the immune system , but whose license and stems should be avoided due to the content of the natural cyanogenic glycosides, which is toxic to humans .

Research has shown a potentially immunosuppressive and cytotoxic effect of seeds plant and extracts or supplements containing the roots, seeds and stems should be avoided for this reason until more research is done. ( 16 )

In addition, the leaves of the plant has been shown to have a mild laxative effect and can cause digestive problems in some people.

Some sources recommend avoiding Moringa entirely as containing nutrients are readily available from other sources and a balanced diet.

Using Moringa

Moringa appears to be more potent when it is fresh, and from the tree grows well in most climates, you can grow the plant for use as an herbal remedy. Dr. Mercola reports that this has been done, but not recommended because the leaves are very small and time for harvest. ( 17 )

It is also available in many forms like leaves and capsules , but because of its possible effects on hormones and cholesterol, it is important to consult a doctor or specialist before using.


definitely, there are some potential benefits for Moringa, especially in countries where malnutrition is widespread, but not as outstanding a source of nutrients as often claimed which is and can be much better sources of these important nutrients for those living in the developed world.

In addition, the potentially negative effects on hormones and order fertility and caution are the reason I avoid using this plant, at least until more research is done.
