summer means swimming, fun and time out of the water: swimmer’s ear. Unfortunately, it also sometimes means the drawbacks related to these activities. Mosquito bites, bee stings, skinned knees and swimmer’s ear.
This year, my husband got a painful case of swimmer’s ear (otitis externa) that my regular remedies ear infection were not ‘t able to help, because the ear was so swollen. A quick research provided some ideas to help remedy this condition and have tried these remedies on my husband. This is what worked and what did not:
What is swimmers ear
Swimmers ear (or otitis externa) is an infection of the outer ear more often caused due to? moisture is trapped in the ear or some damage to the skin of the ear, resulting in inflammation and infection. This commonly occurs in swimmers (hence the name), as they spend more time in the water and have more moisture in the ear than most people, but this kind of painful infection can occur in anyone.
Apparently, since the ear swimmers may be the result of damage to the skin of the outer ear (which allows bacteria or other pathogens to invade the ear), things as simple as using swabs cotton or ear phones ear can make it susceptible to infection.
The swimmers ear can also be very painful and in the case of my husband, who was severe enough to prevent sleep for several nights. Since we were planning to visit a few days after getting the infection, also we consult with a spotlight local emergency for which conventional treatments are for swimmer’s ear and use a combination of recommendations to remedy, ultimately, their infection.

swimmer’s ear, also called otitis externa, is an infection of the outer ear and is not the same as a middle ear infection, which it is more common among children or during a cold or other illness. This type of middle ear infection also known as otitis media and can be very painful.
outer ear infections can also be painful, but in a different way. With swimmer’s ear, the ear canal itself will often be swollen and very painful, so even touching the ear or a finger stick in the ear can be unbearable. This is often an easy way to determine the type of infection-if it sticks a finger in the ear hurts, it is likely that an infection of the outer ear. If the pain is more internal and hurts more when a person swallows, it is more likely that a middle ear infection.
A medical professional can help determine with certainty what type of infection it is, but these types of ear infections are handled differently.
How to prevent swimmers ear
Benjamin Franklin was famous for (among other things) saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and this rings especially true when it comes swimmer’s ear.
The nurse we saw explained that to avoid infection of the outer ear is much easier to get rid of it once it occurs, and that there are no simple measures to reduce the chances of getting this infection. Now we are careful to take some of these measures after our children swim this summer to help prevent infection:
1. Keep the ear dry
seems like common sense, but from an infection of the outer ear is often caused my bacteria that grow in the moisture in the ear while keeping the ear dry is an easy way to help prevent infection. Simple measures like drying the ear after swimming and showering can help the ear infection.
Our nurse practitioner also recommended not trying to remove ear wax, especially with cotton swabs and especially during swimming months as ear wax can help keep the bacteria in the ear the Bay.
2. White vinegar and alcohol use
For children, our doctor recommends using a mixture of white vinegar and alcohol after swimming, especially after swimming in the lake water, the sea or elsewhere they would have a lot of bacteria which could lead to infection. His recipe:
- 1/4 cup white vinegar
- 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
should be stored in an airtight container dark glass with a dropper ( using this ) and use this in the ear after swimming every day. My mom did something similar for me as a child, and had forgotten about it until she mentioned it. I remember not loving ear drops as a child, but neither was swimmer’s ear.
Some sources also claim that this can be a useful way to get rid of swimmer’s ear, once it occurs, but my husband’s ear was so swollen that did not seem to be very effective.
Another way to help keep the ear dry is by using ear plugs, and this is especially useful in the lake or pond water. After some trial and error, we found that earplugs silicone moldable ( as these ) seem to work best as they can be molded to the shape of the ear and are adjustable for adults or children.
Relief for swimmers ear
once my husband had already gotten a bad case of swimmer’s ear, measures that could be used to prevent infection were not as effective and were necessary some stronger remedies. I found that they seemed to help the most:
1. Garlic in the ear
I often used garlic for infections with great results ( included for other types of ear infections ), and I thought it might be useful for swimmer’s ear as well. I do not want to use my go to garlic, oil, fearing that oil could seal the moisture and make things worse.
Instead, I used a variation of a poultice in the outer ear during the night and seemed to offer relief and reduce infection by some
what I did:.
- crushed clove of raw, organic fresh garlic.
- , located in a small piece of sterile gauze .
- Put this in your ear (would not really get into the ear at all because it was swollen) and ribbon with some tape medical to secure it.
2. Essential oils
The nurse explained that often an outer ear infection heals by itself, but even with conventional medical treatment, which often recommend measures for pain relief. Since the pain was enough to keep my husband at night, I used some essential oils (diluted) around the ear to help with the pain. (Note: I would like never use OE inside the ear because they are highly concentrated and can make things worse!)
What I did:
Mixtures 5 drops of lavender essential oil, 2 drops of basil essential oil and 1 drop of peppermint essential oil in 1 tablespoon olive oil and rubbed on the skin around the ear, behind the ear and neck .
3. Hot compresses for relief
found that heat was an effective method of relieving pain and my husband found relief by sleeping with a hot water in the ear.
Why We saw a doctor
we were not familiar with infections of the outer ear and my husband was in a lot of pain and not sleeping, so we go to the doctor for this. Natural remedies are large and use them whenever possible, but since my husband was in a lot of pain and I wanted to make sure there would be no long-term problem of infection, we decided it is best to go to a medical professional.
After talking to the nurse, we learned that mild cases of swimmers ear often disappear on their own, while the drops are often given for the most serious infections (and for pain relief ). It is recommended over the counter pain medication to help reduce pain and swelling and prescribed ear drops as needed.
In the future, we will make sure to follow your advice and use the vinegar solution / alcohol after swimming to avoid any infection.
