radioactive chocolate and toothpaste
I’m going out on a limb and say that none of these products are in wishlist birthday this year, but if you were born in the 1900s could have been. Shortly after the radio discovered Marie and Pierre Curie, who became a popular additive because of its supposed health benefits. Yes, really. ( Source 1 Source 2 )
Fortunately, since the risks became more known we smart enough to change course – a trend that some say it is happening in another industry at this time – dentistry. The practice of using silver fillings, according to the FDA which contain about 50% mercury, has been abandoned by almost half of American dentists who voluntarily responded to a survey on the subject. ( source )
Amalgam fillings – safe or not
Although it is believed to be an inert time, current research shows chewing, drinking liquids hot, brushing and other activities release mercury vapor from amalgams. ( Font 1 Source 2 ) It is estimated that about 80% of inhaled mercury vapor is absorbed by the lungs and spreads throughout the body. ( source )
In 2001 the US Exam National Health and Nutrition published a survey of 31,000 adults found that the number of dental fillings correlated with the incidence of cancer, thyroid disorders, mental illness, neurological problems (including MS), diseases of the respiratory and genitourinary tracts, and diseases of the eyes. ( source ) However, it was concluded that “correlations do not sufficiently demonstrate causality.”
The American Dental Association still maintains that they are safe, but other experts disagree. The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, for example, argues that:
“Science Data renowned scientists from around the world have investigated how the mercury amalgam fillings may be related to immune system dysfunction , multiple sclerosis, kidney disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, allergies, reproductive problems, cardiovascular problems, absorbing heavy metals in the brain, Lou Gehrig’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, antibiotic resistance, loss hearing, and a myriad of other health problems. “(This quote originally included quotations from footnote to support studies. I removed them for easy readability, but can be found fifty-six of them . here )
a “new study by researchers at the University of Michigan says that even at levels considered safe, mercury exposure can be dangerous to health; may be a risk factor for autoimmune disorders among women of childbearing age. “( source )
According to Los Angeles Times ,” amalgams mercury have been banned in three countries, Norway, Denmark and Sweden, after studies indicated that mercury levels in the placenta and fetal tissue directly correspond to the number of the mother of fillings mercury, and a recent advisory committee Food and Drug Administration recommends a similar ban in this country due to lack of clinical research demonstrating the safety of amalgam fillings. “
The current position of the FDA is:
Studies of healthy subjects with amalgam fillings have shown that mercury exposure to mercury vapor bioaccumulate in certain tissues of the body, including the kidneys and brain. studies have shown that bioaccumulation of mercury from dental amalgams results in damage to the target organs. ” ( source )
However, according to some experts, as the authors of this analysis , difficulty with statements like this is that “chronic toxicity mercury is especially insidious because symptoms are variable and non-specific “and” diagnostic tests often misunderstood. “as mentioned in this article James Roberts, MD, MPH, the” safety threshold “for exposure to heavy metals it remains low as researchers develop better ways to detect damage clinically.
Another factor to consider is that about 30-50% of the population has the US MTHFR gene mutation , which can put the production of glutathione in the body at risk. Glutathione is considered a “master antioxidant” that helps the body flush heavy metals distance, so those with impaired function can accumulate more than the average person.
In a study initially concluded that amalgams containing mercury are safe for children – when reanalyzed by four members of the original team and others – is actually exactly what the report called “test damage “including neurobehavioral deficits and kidney damage. ( source ) The analysis shows that people with several different genetic mutations of the MTHFR appeared to be more susceptible. Other studies have concluded that removal of amalgam reduction of health complaints reported by the patient is associated. (More on this later.)
Are there alternatives to dental amalgams?
Yes With the help of a diet rich in minerals. – Contributing to a biological process called normal remineralization – this oral probiotic (I’ll be reviewing soon) and brushing , flossing and oil pulling , I hope to avoid cavities completely. ( Font 1 Source 2 )
However, if I had a cavity that needs attention, I would opt for restorative materials that were specifically compatible with my physiology . You can read more about the biocompatible dentistry here .
should be removed dental amalgams containing mercury?
Dentists that mercury amalgams are believed safe to say no, and dentists who believe they are unsafe often say yes, but says to do safely. in study carried out in Sweden, people who had eliminated their amalgams did report significantly fewer health challenges in three years later than the control group. The study concluded that “reduced mercury exposure, patient-centered [sic] treatment and monitoring, and the elimination of concern are the factors that may have influenced the results.” ( source )
that was first introduced to the controversy surrounding dental amalgams by a family friend who happened to be a dentist. He felt that they do present risks that concerned me because my husband had them. The elimination was not something rushed in, however. Budget was a problem for us, as was the desire to find a local doctor who knew how to take them safely.
Last year, after much research, my husband finally got his withdrawal for recommended by International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology dentist. They more information about removing fillings safely available here and search engine provider along with more useful information here .
Is there a safe way to detox mercury?
In the next post I will share the strategies that I used with my husband, along with several surprising myths I’ve discovered along the way.
