How to stop hiccups in just 10 seconds

Although not serious, hiccups can be very annoying. They occur due to spasms of the diaphragm, which leads us to take a quick breath. The sudden surge of air causes the epiglottis to close and interrupt breathing, which makes the sound “hic”. Some of the remedies are holding your breath or drinking water.

According to André Dubois, MD, PhD, professor of medicine in infectious diseases emerging graduate program at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD, a teaspoon of sugar swallowed dry can stop hiccups in minutes. Sugar modifies the nerve muscles that would otherwise tell the muscles in the diaphragm to contract spasmodically and it lead to hiccups.

Take a teaspoon of sugar and put it in the back of the tongue. You will overload the nerve endings in the mouth with a sweet sensation, and it will help to stop hiccups.
