Recently, the Journal of Dental Research published a study showing that a new tissue regeneration technique can help in the regeneration pearly white teeth.
Dr. Jeremy Mao, Professor Edward V. Zegarellu of Dental Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, explains that a three-dimensional scaffold with growth factor has the potential to regenerate and regrow teeth anatomically only correct within nine weeks after implantation.
The procedure was developed in the Laboratory of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine at the University. In the process, the body’s own stem cells go into the scaffold, which is composed of all natural materials. Once the scaffold is colonized with stem cells, the tooth begins to grow in the socket, and later merged with the surrounding tissue.
Thus the teeth do not grow in a petri dish, and anatomically correct teeth regenerated by the proper use material body. This dental treatment offers quicker recovery time and, unlike implantation, a completely natural process regrowth.
The patent applications already filed, and Columbia University seeks partners to assist in the commercialization of this technology. Dr. Mao looking for the best approach in implementing its profitable technique in clinical therapies.
