Gout is a complex form of arthritis, and although it is shrouded in mystery and often overlooked by those who do not have it, can be excruciating and debilitating for those who do. It is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the blood, which is the product of decomposition of waste substances that are normally dissolved in the blood and processed by the kidneys. For people who suffer from gout attacks, your kidneys do not eliminate enough uric acid fast and crystallizes and accumulates in the joint. Symptoms include sudden pain, pain, heat and redness in the joints. In many cases it is at the base of the big toe and the pain can be so excruciating that even a light touch pen will be too much to bear. Gout is chronic, and there are quite a few people out there who do not want to be on aspirin for the rest of their lives. To make a mixture of these ingredients and use their natural healing properties, can help relieve / prevent its symptoms, similar to how a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory would.
Ingredients: pineapple, turmeric, ginger root, tart cherry juice
. Why pineapple: pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain, which has proven useful in reducing inflammation. The theory behind why it works is that affect the synthesis of prostaglandins (basically interferes with hormones that send the signal that something must swell.) Bromelain is an enzyme that digests protein (hence why pineapple is so popular meat tenderizers) and gout has been linked to diets high in protein, which can cause an excess of uric acid to accumulate in the blood.
Why Turmeric: Turmeric contains curcumin, which has seen great success with pain relief lately. curcumin blocks production of the protein indicating the blood vessels to expand.
Why ginger root: the root of ginger contains gingerol, an active component that is related to the capsaicin. Gingerols are structured like capsaicin at a molecular level, which means that can help inhibit signals to the brain that trigger pain. They also decrease the enzymes that cause inflammation.
Why tart cherry juice (optional): Cherries have been linked to reducing the levels of uric acid in the studies, and although the studies were not conducted specifically in gout, it is likely to help prevent an attack if consumed regularly.
-1-2 teaspoons turmeric powder
-2-3 teaspoons ground ginger, or 1 inch fresh ginger root
-1 cup of tart cherry juice
-Blender, food processor, or a lot of elbow grease
-A container glass with a tight lid
Cut the skin and stem out pineapple . You can cut and use the stem and tension drink, or you can choose not to use it. The reason why you might include it is because the stem has a high concentration of bromein, but using only the fruit is good too. Cut the pineapple into pieces that are roughly the same size and toss them in the food processor or blender. they turn around until fairly evenly crushed up, pour 1 cup of tart cherry juice, then sprinkle 1-2 teaspoons 2-3 teaspoons turmeric and ginger. Store in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator up to a week and a half. You can add honey to taste if desired, and also choose to use the greater or lesser amount of turmeric and ginger, depending on how you like it.
Notes: Like nettle tea, if you can have some of it every day, go for it. It could help prevent an attack of gout in the first place. Otherwise, you can grab a cup as needed for pain when turning. The drink will remain up to one month in the refrigerator. If you do it on a regular basis, just make a big batch and then make a new one at the end of the month. If it is not practical or possible for you to get a pineapple, there bromein supplements out there. Do not get any kind of canned pineapple and canned as enzymes have been killed by the heat used in the process of making the product.
As we change our diets (not necessarily for the better) and more people experience high blood pressure, gout cases are becoming increasingly common. Find out which foods could lead to it will be very beneficial and a diet of “drop”. Remember that just because something is natural does not guarantee your safety, if you are taking medication or if you do not know how these ingredients can affect you, always consult a medical professional before using.
Tip: If you are in the mood for a drink, turmeric, ginger and bromein all come in supplement form for preventive measures. Again, make sure they are safe for you to take!
